Finding English Translations
As mentioned in another tab in this guide, reference books sometimes list (some of) the English translations of early Christian writers, so the bibliographies of reference articles should be consulted.
Library Catalog and ATLA Religion Databases
Searching for early Christian authors in the library catalog or databases can be complicated because some people are known by different names or their names occur in multiple forms:
Augustine, of Hippo, Saint, 354-430 / Aurelius Augustinus, Saint, 354-430
Basil, Saint, Bishop of Caesarea, approximately 329-379 / Basil, the Great, Saint, Bishop of Caesarea, approximately 329-379
Gregory of Nazianzus / Gregory Nazianzen;
John of Damascus, Saint / John Damascene, Saint
Polycarp, Saint, Bishop of Smyrna / Polycarpus, Saint, Bishop of Smyrna
Sometimes multiple people share a name or a part of a name, especially before family or surnames became common:
Augustine of Hippo; Augustine of Canterbury
Cyril of Alexandria; Cyril of Jerusalem;
Gregory of Nyssa; Gregory of Nazianzus/Nazianzen;
Popes Gregory I and Gregory VII;
Moreover, the form used in the online Brandel Library catalog and the ATLA Religion Database may differ from each other.
